The hunt is on for Hereford’s best young historian. The county oral history group, Herefordshire Lore, has launched the competition with results to be announced at their History Day in Hereford Town Hall on September 21.
The Young Historian winner will go home with a cup and a cash prize of £50. The second and third will each collect £25 and £15 respectively and the presentation will be made by BBC’s Nick Barratt from Who Do You Think You Are?
The theme this year is ‘Local Hero.’ Competitors are invited to submit their entries describing the history of their local hero. Marsha O’Mahony is with Herefordshire Lore: “It could be a great-grandad in wartime, a grandmother picking hops, a dad working at Bulmers, or a mum at the May Fair. Tell us their story in no more than 50 words, with accompanying pictures if you have them”.
The event is sponsored by Steven and Jenny Thomas from estate agents, Watkins Thomas: “It’s a pleasure to support our young historians for the future,” explained Steven.
Entrants must be aged 11 and under. The deadline, which should be sent to Herefordshire Lore, The Pavilion, Castle Green, Hereford HR1 2NW, is Friday, September 6.
